Decorate A Cake At Home
Remember in school when we first made rock buns? I am sure they are everyone’s first attempt at baking. But look how far we have come as bakers these days, especially as we can bake the most awesome cakes in our own kitchen. Making beautiful cakes isn’t just for the village baker, it is for you too. All you need is a little bit of knowledge and to watch a few videos. You do need some basic baking tools to start off with, but the rest comes with practice. Here are a few ideas for you to try at home decorate a cake at home.
When your cake first comes out of the oven, it is so easy to want to take the cake out of the cake tin as soon as it has been cooked. But don’t! You need it to cool down first, otherwise, it will crumble. You also need it cooled down before you start icing the cake, otherwise, the icing will melt.

So when the cake has cooled and you have removed it from the case, cover it with a thin layer of icing. Pop it in the fridge for about 20 minutes, before building it up with more layers. Smooth the icing around the side of the cake by running your spatula around it.
Easy Designs To Do
Some bakers say learning to smooth the icing is actually the hardest part of cake decorating. Practising it will make you an expert in no time at all. If you don’t want to do any more icing or decoration, this is still a lovely finish to the cake.
- If Icing isn’t your thing, or you are running out of time. Use a sieve and some icing sugar to create a pretty top to a bare cake. This finish is perfect for a Victoria sponge cake. You can even get stencils to put designs on the top of the cake.
- Edible decorations are a beautiful yet simple cake decorating technique. The use of sprinkles, sweets, nuts, and coconut pressed into the icing before it sets, will make your cake stand out.
- You can apply a textured look to your cake decorating by using a small cardboard comb. These are available in baking shops and online.
- Melted chocolate dripped over the top of a cake, looks really inviting when it has hardened. So does a glaze that trickles over the top and down the sides.

Pretty Designs With Icing
Have you often seen icing on cakes and wondered how it is done? It is easy. To decorate a cake like this, you need a piping bag and a tip. You fill the icing in the icing bag and twist the top closed to stop the icing from falling out. Then with a steady hand, you can make lines, words, shells, flowers, and many other designs all over your cake if you wish. You need to keep your hand steady whilst you ice your cake. But you can use your second hand to help steady it and guide the tip of the icing bag.
Fondant icing is the icing that you can roll out and make into shapes or patterns. If your kid wants a Minecraft cake, then fondant icing is for you. You simply knead it, roll it out and place it over the cake. It lays flat and then you build on it to make your 3d creation. Although it is bland compared to buttercream icing in the icing bag, it is still just as much fun to make.
