How To Get Double Glazed Windows For Free

What You Need

  • Cling Film, spending a little bit more, will mean a better quality film than a cheaper one. It cuts easier and is easier to work with.
  • Double-sided sticky tape
  • A hairdryer

Firstly you need to clean your windows, making sure that all of the grease and dirt is wiped away. Make sure there is nothing stuck on the windows too. Dilute some washing-up liquid with water and wipe the windows. Make sure you get into the corners.

Place the double-sided sticky tape on the edge of the windows. Make sure it is flat and right up to the window frame. When you are happy with the tape, grab your clingfilm.

Starting from the top of the window, attach the edge of the clingfilm to the tape. Keep the clingfilm taut as you roll it down. Sticking it to the tape as you go. When you have rolled it all the way to the bottom, just cut off the excess cling film.

Grab your hairdryer and pop it onto medium heat, then blow the dryer over the clingfilm. This will stretch it tighter and get rid of the wrinkles in the film. Now you have double glazed windows that will last you a year at least and hopefully get you through at least one winter.

More Tips to Keep your Windows Looking Good For Longer

Here are some more tips to help your windows last a little bit longer before you need to replace them.

Rub Out A scratch With Toothpaste

Take a soft cloth and put a small amount of white toothpaste on there. Then rub vigorously it into the crack for a couple of minutes. Do not use coloured or striped toothpaste as it will add colour to the crack. You can also use tooth powder too

Stop Cracks With Nail Polish

Nail polish works well for so many things around the house. But if you have a crack in a glass cabinet or window, you can stop it from getting worse. Simply grab a clear nail polish, if you don’t have any you can buy one for about £3. Put a couple of coats on the crack to seal it and stop it from spreading. It should hold until you can get a replacement glass.

Draughty Window Leak

If you run your hands around the window frame and you feel a draught, you can fix it yourself. You can seal it yourself with a sealant gun and some sealant. You can buy these from a hardware store or Poundland. Then carefully seal the draughty area (or the whole frame).

Keep Your Window Frames Protected

If you have wooden window frames, then make sure that you keep them painted to protect them. Window frames that are not protected with paint or varnish, will start to rot and will no longer hold the weight of the window. It costs a few quid a year to protect the windows instead of a few thousand to replace them.

Sagging Windows

Sometimes hinged windows can start to sag because corner joints have started to weaken. But this is easily remedied with some corner L-shaped corner plates. Go outside to the closed window and drive wooden wedges between the window and its frame. this helps to fill any loose joints and to raise the sunken window. Then screw the metal plates into the corners. This should hold it for a while for you.
